Local entertainment featured at Aldergrove Fair

Rock, blues, country, and more from 91原创 artists will perform on stage July 20 and 21

It's difficult to secure entertainment for a free festival that's the size of the Aldergrove Fair, but for more than 30 years Geoff Dueck has met the challenge for the weekend-long event.

This year, the fair is heavily featuring local bands and artists performing music from the 鈥60s, 鈥70s, 鈥80s, and 鈥90s.

"We thank all of those who have helped us this year to achieve our goals. With their support, we have managed to bring to our stage some extremely talented musical acts and entertainers," he said.

Kicking off the fair at the Aldy Show n' Shine car show Friday night, July 19, will be the instrumental surf guitar music of the '60s by The Tailfins, Dueck told The Star.

Friday will also see Knight Lites perform classic rock.

Saturday is to be filled with the sounds of Los Grandes, a band from Mexico, award winning Robyn Gillespie, classic country music with Willy Michaels and Brian Zalo, and the Country Cuties with line dance demonstrations.

This year, Dueck thanks Otter Co-op for sponsoring the main stage so he could have Bobby Bruce, a Neil Diamond tribute artist 鈥 who Dueck says was widely requested.

Plus, Aldergrove's own favourite sons Byrd Dawg will grace the stage with tributes to iconic musical duos The Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel, returning to the fair after 10 years.

"Each year we try to feature diverse musical genres, and local talent this year is no different," Dueck said.

Sunday opens with Aldergrove resident Gareth Johannesson of Cowboy Church at 9 a.m. 鈥 a fair tradition.

He's followed by a set of bluegrass by 91原创's The Church Boys.

Sunday also features Aldergrove's Chelsea Charlton, and wraps up with the Brian Holden band for an afternoon of classic blues.

"[It will be] a great weekend of live entertainment for everyone," Dueck said.

Like every year, Dueck said he looks forward to seeing the smiles on people鈥檚 faces.

鈥淚 never have as much fun as I do working on the Aldergrove Fair,鈥 he said.

Dueck said his connections in the music community have helped him work within the fair鈥檚 budget, as it relies on donations, sponsorships, and volunteers to operate.

鈥淭his is a free to the community festival. We accept donations at the gate, but nobody would be turned away if they don鈥檛 have a dollar in their pocket.鈥

The Aldergrove Fair takes place from Friday to Sunday, July 19 to 21.
