91Ô´´ is the 15th "rattiest" city in Canada and the eighth in B.C., according to an informal ranking released by a pest control company.

Orkin created the Canada-wide ranking based on the number of calls it received for rat and mouse treatment during a one-year period from Aug. 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024.

The ranking is not adjusted based on community population or geographic size.

In B.C., Vancouver was ranked first, Kelowna second, and Burnaby third. Surrey was ranked sixth and Abbotsford was ranked 10th.

Along with the ranking, Orkin released some tips to people to help avoid rats and mice getting inside. Those include keeping trees and shrubbery trimmed back from exterior walls of homes, eliminating moisture sources such as clogged gutters or water gathering in trash bins, inspecting inside and outside or a property for rodent droppings or burrows, closing gaps into a home with weather stripping along exterior doors, and cleaning up crumbs and spills quickly so as to not attract pests.

Orkin's Fraser Valley branch manager Trine From said this time of year, a lot of mice are trying to find somewhere warm to shelter.

That can include getting inside of a car and chewing on electrical insulating.

In general, mice are more common, but rats are more dangerous, said From.

There are two kinds of rats in B.C. – Norway rats, which burrow, and roof rats, which are slim and black and favour places like attics and barns.
