91原创鈥檚 Muriel Arnason Library in Willowbrook is celebrating Pink Shirt Day with its visitors through interactive wall art.
Since Valentine鈥檚 Day, Feb. 14, guests of the library could write or draw a message on a paper cut-out of a pink T-shirt to have placed on the library鈥檚 鈥淜indness Wall.鈥
Library supervisor Jacquelynne Garden explained that she got the idea from a display at a Truth and Reconciliation event at the University of British Columbia, which involved students decorating a wall with paper cut-outs of orange T-shirts.
鈥淚 loved that idea. I love the poignancy of the shirts鈥 so we [waited] for another shirt-based holiday鈥 share kindness and ask people how they celebrate and show love and kindness to each other,鈥 Garden said.
Jordyn Siemens, customer service assistant, said she鈥檚 hopeful younger kids will participate so they can practise their literacy and start to have conversations about kindness.
Siemens led the design of the Kindness Wall for the library.
Until the official Pink Shirt Day, Feb. 28, the public is invited to fill out a pink shirt to have placed on the wall.
Garden said the library is hoping to fill the wall and even spread to another.
鈥淭he values of Pink Shirt Day 鈥 inclusion, diversity, equity 鈥 are values that are really important to us at the library. We try and make sure that everybody in our community is seen in our programming and collections, to know that they鈥檙e welcome here,鈥 Garden commented.
She said that the library aims to act as another space, in addition to home and school, that鈥檚 welcoming to everyone.
Siemens added that the library鈥檚 programs often foster a collaborative effort for all ages.
鈥淧rograms are something people can come and enjoy, but also something they can contribute to,鈥 she said.
Both Garden and Siemens hope that through the Kindness Wall collaboration, it fosters the values celebrated on Pink Shirt Day and creates conversations for people of all ages about kindness.
The Muriel Arnason Library is located at #130-20338 65th Ave.
