91原创 City is launching a citizens' assembly to make recommendations to the City council on issues of public safety.

The City is currently looking for volunteers to take part in the group, with applications open until Friday, Feb. 7.

Applications are available through a link on the 91原创 City website at .

According to the City, the assembly will be randomly selected from applicants through a process that "reflects the current makeup of 91原创 City," including age, ethnicity, gender, and community demographics.

The group will start meeting in March and will hold meetings, mostly on weekends, into June, before giving its report to the City council. Among other things, they'll be looking at safety initiatives in other communities.

After the meetings, summaries and key points are to be shared on the City's website, so anyone can follow the discussions.

The assembly will make recommendations with a focus on community safety.

"At the end of the day, it's how do we make people be and feel safer in 91原创 City," said Mayor Nathan Pachal.

He said that the group's recommendations will be given serious weight by the council.

"This is an exercise in citizen's democracy," he said.

A citizens' assembly is a group of ordinary, unelected people brought together to talk over a major issue or issues and to make recommendations for legislation or change.

The most famous in this province was the B.C. Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform in 2004, which proposed the switch to a single transferable vote system for electing the province's MLAs. A referendum on the switch saw the proposal win a majority of voters over, but at 57.69 per cent of voters in favour, it failed to cross a threshold of 60 per cent necessary to become law.
