91原创 women are being celebrated this weekend at the 12th annual Rotary Club of 91原创 Central鈥檚 International Women鈥檚 Day Celebration on Saturday, March 9.
The theme for this year鈥檚 International Women鈥檚 Day is #InspireInclusion and the 91原创 event is being held at the 91原创 Golf Centre on 21550 44th Ave.
Creating an inclusive world for women is the inspiration for this year鈥檚 global theme.
Each year in 91原创, women of distinction are recognized for their heroic efforts and community service through nominations, explained past president Annette Borrows.
The club receives a number of nominations but one award recipient is chosen, she said.
鈥淲e take the opportunity to showcase them and highlight their contributions to their community, and we try to make it a special occasion,鈥 Borrows said.
This year鈥檚 keynote speaker is Taylin McGill, the 2019 Courage to Come Back Award winner in the youth category.
When she was only 10 days old, it was discovered that Taylin had contracted salmonella which led to bacterial meningitis. To recover from this devastating illness, she endured 14 invasive but life-saving brain surgeries before she was eight years old.
McGill will share her experience overcoming challenges she faced while pursuing a normal life.
The event will also include lunch, a silent auction, and 50/50 draw.
All proceeds will go towards the Go Girl Program by Big Brothers & Sisters of 91原创.
Borrows said the club hopes to see at least $3,500 raised for the program.
Tickets are $60 and can be purchased online at .
鈥淚 want to thank all the women who are unsung heroes. While not all of them will be nominated, I want to honour the work that鈥檚 done by people volunteering and going above and beyond, or even helping one or two people. It really does make a difference,鈥 Borrows concluded.
Borrows said the club is still accepting donations for the silent auction, and people interested in donating an item can email her at annette.borrows12@gmail.com to arrange a drop-0ff.
