The holiday season is a big opportunity for fundraising and donations, but 91原创 Animal Protection Society (LAPS) is worried the postal strike could impact their donations received by mail.
While people can donate online through its website, executive director Sarah Jones said a "good portion of our donations we get through the mail around Christmas time."
"Christmas is the time when most people donate because of the spirit of Christmas, but it's also tax receipt time. Getting your last donations in before the end of the year is going to pose a bit of a problem," she said.
On Nov. 15, Canada Post workers went on strike after lengthy negotiations failed to secure a contract.
Jones said those who donate to LAPS will receive a tax receipt in the mail, but due to the postal strike, there will be a delay.
"We've had to move all our suppliers onto [electronic funds transfers] or hand delivering cheques, and it's quite the work load," Jones commented.
Since the holiday season is the biggest donation season for the animal shelter, Jones is concerned it will be behind for its 2024 year.
She encourages people to drop off cheques during business hours at LAPS instead, and assured tax receipts would be sent in January.
"As long as the payment is in before Dec. 31, they can get their tax receipts in January when the strike is over. We will have them ready," Jones said.
"But the actual donations are needed for the animals to come in this calendar year. We rely so much on our community, like our cat programs are 100 per cent donor funded," she added.
Jones noted that people can also get a kitten cuddle when they stop by the shelter.
Other ways people can donate to support LAPS is exploring its new shop option on its , and can sponsor a dog in the shelter, which helps ensure its nutrition, medical, and quality of life needs are met. Those who sponsor will receive a "proud sponsor" t-shirt.
LAPS also often hosts fundraisers for certain animals requiring special medical attention. Currently, a fundraiser is being held through Canada Helps to help four-month-old kitten Jingle.
She was surrendered with burns on all four of her paws, where one is so bad it may have permanently damaged her tendons, Jones said.
The goal of the fundraiser is $5,000 to cover vet bills. People can donate at , and will receive a tax receipt via email.
LAPS is located at 26220 56 Ave., and is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
