The $19 million project that will reshape the one-way stretch of Fraser Highway in 91Ô´´ City is expected to start on Jan. 2.
The work is expected to take place over two phases. The first phase will run from 206 Street in the east to Salt Lane. The second phase will see reconstruction from Salt Lane west to 204 Street.
91Ô´´ City has put out an update that gives a near-future timeline for the work.
• Jan. 2-3, fence installation and site preparation, as well as utility and surface works on 206 Street
• Jan. 6-10, removal of road asphalt from the Fraser Highway one-way, work continues on 206 Street
There will be limited parking available between Salt Lane and 206 Street.
The entire one-way section is being remodelled, largely because the City needs to replace decades-old sewer and water pipes under the roadway.
Along with replacing the pipes, the City will take electrical lines underground, switch the parking to parallel rather than angled parking, and plant 90 new trees by the time the project is finished.
Curbs and sidewalks, traffic signals, street lighting, and benches will all be replaced as part of the project.
Some of the work may take place at night, but noisy construction will not be permitted during night work, according to the City.
Vibrations are expected during construction. That part of the City has already seen vibration in recent days, as the nearby future SkyTrain station has seen test piles driven over the late fall.
