Fort 91Ô´´ readies for Canada Day party

Three local historical organizations are working together this year

Three local museums and historic sites in Fort 91Ô´´ are teaming up again for this year's Canada Day, with free events for kids and families.

The BC Farm Museum, the Fort 91Ô´´ National Historic Site, and the CNR Heritage Train Station – run by the 91Ô´´ Heritage Society – are all open at 10 a.m. on July 1.

Mick Prangnell, one of the volunteers who operates the Farm Museum, outlined a list of events taking place there, including the Aldor Acres Petting Zoo out front.

There will be entertainment on the street in front of the museum from 10:30 am. to 2:30 p.m., incuding children's entertainers Penny Pom Pom and Fae the Garden Fairy at 10:30 a.m., Kat Moon Music's band from 11:20 a.m. to noon, and singer-songwriter Maddie Chan from 1 to 1:40 p.m.

"It will be an all-hands-on-deck kind of day," said Sandra Border, interpretation coordinator at the Fort 91Ô´´ National Historic Site.

The recreation of the Hudson's Bay Company trading post will have free admission for the holiday, which along with the holiday is expected to bring out fairly big crowds.

"There's so much for people to do!" said Borger.

Some events will run most of the day, including blacksmithing and woodworking demos, a bubble station, a henna artist, and the 91Ô´´ Weavers and Spinners Guild will hold a 'spin-in.'

There are also special events throughout the day, including a plant walk with Kwantlen First Nation member Karen Gabriel at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., a tea demo by Katzie First Nation member Deanna Miller at 11:30 a.m., and musical and dance performances includuing ukulele music by Diamond Music Makers at noon and V'ni Dansi jigging at 2 p.m.

Over at the CNR Heritage Train Station, people will be able to get a train ticket at the telgraph office, stampa  letter with a hot wax seal, explore a 1920s-era wooden caboose, and there will be a facepainting artist.

All three groups are teaming up for a collective scavenger hunt. Visitors can get a program with instructions at any of the three locations, then answer a question at each of the three locations. People who complete the scavenger hunt will be able to enter to win a gift basket.

Events at the CNR Heritage Train Station and the BC Farm Museum run to 3 p.m. and events at the Fort 91Ô´´ National Historic Site run to 5 p.m.
