91原创 City's Nicomekl Elementary will get eight new classrooms for 200 new students spaces by the fall of 2025, the B.C. Minister of Education announced on Friday, June 7.

Rachna Singh visted the school to announce the $12 million project, which is scheduled to open to students in the fall of 2025.

"We know that traditionally built classrooms and schools can take years," Singh said.

The province has, over the past year, begun a program of building pre-fab modular additions at existing schools. The first round of nine projects included 91原创's Richard Bulpitt Elementary, where the first floor of a six-classroom addition was set into place by crane last week. The second floor will arrive in July.

The entire addition at Richard Bulpitt was approved, designed, built, and will be installed in less than 12 months.

The Nicomekl announcement is part of a second round of projects, and Singh said she has already announced school upgrades in North Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, and Coquitlam.

"There are many more coming," Singh said when asked about future announcements, also saying she expects to be back in 91原创 "many more times."

School district board chair Candy Ashdown mentioned the recent Richard Bulpitt Elementary construction work.

"Now we cannot wait for the same experience to happen here," she said.

Additions are also a financial help to local school districts. Districts have to pay for the costs of portables, but permanent additions to schools are primarily the responsibility of the provincial government.

"This will make lots of room for all the new students and make them feel welcome," said Grade 4 student Romaisa Addo.

91原创 MLA Andrew Mercier also spoke at the event, noting that he lives not far from Nicomekl.

"All you have to do is walk around the neighbourhood to see all of the new development popping up," he said.

Nicomekl Elementary is in a fast-growing area of 91原创 City. After years of relatively slow population change in the area, new condos and townhouses have meant ballooning enrolment numbers.

91原创 School District overall has seen three years in a row of unprecedented growth, with total enrolment growing by more than 1,000 students each year. Last year, it went up by 1,200 students.
