Christmas comedy features young Aldergrove actor

Spencer Danek will play the role of Fritz in Gallery 7's holiday play

Young Aldergrove actor Spencer Danek, 18, will be featured in his second play with Gallery 7 coming to the stage Friday, Dec. 13.

In the romantic comedy 'Parfumerie', Danek will play the role of Fritz, a young man looking to make some money as the new delivery boy.

"Similar to me, he's in a position between high school and post-secondary school," Danek shared.

He didn't audition for a particular role for the play, rather Danek put his trust in director Sarah Green.

"I told [her], 'I trust that you will put me in the role that works best for me and the show in general.'"

After working together in last year's production of 'Miss Bennet: Christmas At Pemberley' also directed by Green, Danek knew she would put him in the right role.

And he agrees with her decision.

"It's quite easy to connect to a character that's in a similar stage of life and mindset, the only difference being that he lived 87 years ago," Danek joked.

"I can understand how he might feel lost and not really know what the next step for him is, but pursuing a job that makes him happy nonetheless."

'Parfumerie' takes place in Budapest during Christmas in 1937, and follows George who works in a parfumerie – a factory and retail store that manufactures and sells soaps and perfumes. But just before the holiday, George is abruptly fired by his boss who mistakenly believed George is having an affair with his wife.

Meanwhile, George's real love life is thrown into chaos when he learns the stranger he has been corresponding with by mail is his co-worker, Amalia Balash, who he constantly fights with. For the employees of the parfumerie, only the truth can lead to a happy resolution in this old-fashioned, romantic Christmas tale.

"It's a love story with plot twists you'd never see coming. There's also many funny moments and dialogues, it's nearly impossible for us actors to stay in character," Danek enthused.

The production runs Friday and Saturday, Dec.13 and 14, and Dec.17 to 21, at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Dec. 14 and 21, at 2 p.m. at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.

"I am confident that audiences will be quickly swept away by the intertwined stories that push and pull each character forward and by the brilliant actors performing those characters," Green said.

Tickets can be purchased online at or by calling 604-504-5940.
