This year鈥檚 walk-a-thon will be the 鈥渂iggest yet鈥� as the Canadian Animal Rescue and Extended Shelter (CARES) marks 20 years of hosting the annual fundraiser in support of local cats.

Clive Ellis, public relations director at CARES, said this will be the largest walk event held so far.

鈥淲e鈥檝e come a long way in 20 years,鈥� he reminisced.

The event typically sees around 40 people attend the walk, and during the years has raised between $5,000 and $12,000 each year.

This year, Ellis hopes the walk raises $10,000.

鈥淲e have some very generous supporters and other people do what they can, they鈥檙e very loyal to us,鈥� he said.

Registration opens at noon, and tickets are $20 per walker. The walk starts at 1 p.m. and takes place at Derby Reach Regional Park on Sunday, Sept. 17.

After the 5 kilometre walk, a complimentary barbecue will be held including hotdogs, hamburgers, and chilli.

Prizes will also be given away, including gift cards to various grocery stores, cat care books, and canned food, which was donated by Royal Canin.

One special kitty that will be up for adoption is Summer. Ellis said he has a liver issue, but with the help of a special diet of eggs and canned liver Summer is 鈥渃oming along.鈥�

鈥淲e pride ourselves on giving the cats a good home, lots of love and attention,鈥� Ellis said. 鈥淭hese poor [cats] need our help, they need our support., and hopefully we can find them good homes.鈥�
