Work crews were called to deal with a barge appeared stuck near the shore of Two Bit Bar in Glen Valley Regional Park on Saturday, Oct. 26.

While the barge has since been moved, the Canadian Coast Guard said it was there until at least Saturday evening.

"The Canadian Coast Guard received a report from the public that a gravel barge was aground in the Fraser River, at the bottom of Crescent Island, approximately one-kilometre downstream of the Mission Bridge," said Michelle Imbeau, communications advisor.

The barge owner told the coast guard that when it was being towed, the towing vessel operator noticed the barge was taking on water Friday evening, Oct. 25.

"The towing vessel navigated it to go soft aground to prevent it from potentially sinking," Imbeau explained.

"There were no pollutants onboard the aground barge."

Throughout Saturday, the barge owner worked with Fraser River Pile and Dredge to remove the gravel from the barge to a different barge using a crane, she told The Star.

"Pumps were then used to dewater the aground barge," Imbeau said.

By the evening, the coast guard was informed that the barge was no longer aground and it was towed away to the owner's facility and will be removing the barge from the water for repairs.
