Following a six-day shutdown due to a power failure, Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre was to set to reopen Sunday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m.
On Saturday, steam could be seen rising from the outdoor pool as it warmed up, thanks to a rented portable substation installed in the back of the facility where a 34,500 volt transformer broke down around midnight, Monday Jan, 22.
Mayor Eric Woodward described it as 鈥渁 significant electrical equipment failure鈥 in a Saturday morning online update.
鈥淚n phases, the [ACUCC] will re-open this weekend starting Sunday morning, and hopefully [be] fully back to normal by early next week,鈥 Woodward said.
鈥淎 great job all round to get it back open as soon as possible.鈥
Staff mobilized temporary electrical equipment as soon as possible, but securing a permanent replacement 鈥渃ould be a long time away, unfortunately,鈥 Woodward said.
A temporary wood fence was up around the transformer and red 鈥渄anger do not enter鈥 tape could be seen.
An by the Township promised mechanical systems would be 鈥渃losely monitored to ensure a full return to standard operations.鈥
Facilities at the centre, which opened in 2018, include swimming pools, an ice arena, and fitness centre.
A public swim in the pools was scheduled from from 1-8 p.m., 鈥渨ith usual pool temperatures,鈥 the fitness centre was to be open with weight room and fitness classes, and the ice arena was expected to return to its regular schedule.
However, swimming lessons were cancelled for Sunday.
When the transformer failed, witness Sunny Sharma told the 91原创 Advance Times there was a 鈥渓arge bang鈥 and smoke, and half the lights at the centre went off.
It happened just a few days after the ACUCC was forced to cancel all drop-in and registered programs on Jan. 17 due to severe winter weather.
Aldergrove Kodiaks, who were scheduled to host the Chilliwack Jets Wednesday night, announced the game had to be postponed, with the online notice citing 鈥渕echanical issues.鈥
Kodiaks already had to cancel a previous Wednesday Jan. 17 home game at the Aldergrove arena against Ridge Meadows because of severe weather.
Kodiaks next home game at ACUCC was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7:15 p.m.
