Aldergrove Community Secondary held its second annual plant sale, which raises funds to donate to a local charity or non-profit organization.
This year, donations were given to the OAP Heritage Hall located off Fraser Highway and 273 Street, said Amanda Smith, agricultural program coordinator at 91ԭ Environmental Partners Society (LEPS).
“We donated our first plant sale [funds] to 91ԭ Meals on Wheels and the Firehouse Cafe in Aldergrove,” Smith said. “But this year students researched about the non-profits here and voted on who would be the recipient.”
The plant sale is also an opportunity for students to gain beginner agricultural experience, she noted, through the WAVE program – work and volunteer experience.
“Through our LEPS programming we’ve been helping them, as a non-profit, grow food, knowing where food comes from, and doing an annual plant sale for the community,” Smith said.
Students in the program have been learning environmental science and life skills since it started in October. Their plants for sale were grown at the school.
“It’s a great thing to bring the entire Aldergrove community together. It’s a wonderful thing to involve the school, involve the students, and all the residents,” Smith commented.
Hailey McCaig, a Grade 11 student in the WAVE program, said they’ve been working for months to prepare for the plant sale.
“We really want to come back to the connectedness of nature… it feels so good to be around them. I think it’s a good way to relax and help the community and the ecosystem, as well by planting these types of plants is good for the pollinators,” she said.
Plants for sale ranged from vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, squash, and zucchini to cooking herbs like basil, dill, thyme, and catnip. Flowers were also for sale, including Campanula, Silene, Dusty Miller, and Love in a Puff.
The plant sale is anticipated to return again next year.
