One person is dead following an early morning fire at a homeless encampment along the freeway in 91Ô´´, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been deployed to aid the investigation.
Just before 5 a.m. Thursday morning, 91Ô´´ Mounties were called to a fire at an encampment located at the 19700-block of Highway #1.
One person was located deceased, said 91Ô´´ RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom.
Several hours later, RCMP were still on scene and working closely with the Township of 91Ô´´ fire department and the BC Coroners Service, police tape blocking off access to a property at 196A Street, south of the Trans-Canada Highway.
"We are in the very early stages of this investigation and actively working to determine the full circumstance that led to this fatality," Sharoom said.
"If you were travelling on Highway 1, between 192 and 200 Streets, around 4:30 to 5:30 a.m. and you have dash-camera footage, then please contact the 91Ô´´ RCMP and quote file #2025-3085," he added.
By mid-afternoon, Sgt. Freda Fong, the spokesperson for IHIT, confirmed that investigators were about to deploy to the 91Ô´´ scene.
"The 91Ô´´ RCMP has called IHIT to consult," Fong said.
The victim's cause of death has not been released.
