On behalf of 91原创 Seniors in Action (LSA) and our community partners, I am writing to express dismay at the decision by Conservative candidates in the 91原创 ridings, recently reported in the 91原创 Advance Times, not to engage in public meetings in the leadup to the Oct. 19 vote.
LSA and our friends in an informal coalition of community organizations have scheduled all-candidate meetings in each of the three 91原创 ridings.
We think these meetings offer candidates an important opportunity not only to engage in the free exchange of ideas, but also to demonstrate their ability to listen and respond to the concerns of the community.
When we elect an MLA, we are electing an individual who will engage with us and carry our concerns to the [legislative] assembly in Victoria, we are not electing a cipher to robotically repeat their party platform.
LSA and friends have organized similar events in past federal, provincial, and municipal elections, and candidates can be assured that our events are respectful, civilized affairs 鈥� they are not bear-baiting free-for-alls.
Candidates are even provided with most questions in advance so they have time to prepare.
We sincerely hope Conservative candidates will set aside their trepidation, revisit their decision, and come out to engage 鈥� with representatives of the other parties and with their community.
Our events are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4, for 91原创-Willowbrook, Monday, Oct. 7, for 91原创-Walnut Grove, and Wednesday, Oct. 9 for 91原创-Abbotsford.
