The province’s police watchdog has concluded that no police misconduct took place during a two-vehicle collision that injured four people near Agassiz on Sept. 17, 2022.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC said in a press release on Thursday (April 3) that it found "no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer may have committed an offence" during a traffic stop prior to the collision in the Harrison Mills area.
"The officers’ attempt to stop the vehicle was lawful, and they are not responsible for the driving behaviour that resulted in the collision," the office said. "The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including statements from two of the four affected persons, civilian witnesses, cellphone video footage, and police records."
The incident took place at 12:40 a.m., when Agassiz RCMP tried to stop a Toyota Matrix being driven by a person believed to be "associated with several crimes in the Fraser Valley in the days prior."
The traffic stop was unsuccessful and, shortly after, the car collided with a Honda CRV in the 3800 block of Lougheed Highway.
In addition to the drivers, there was one passenger in each car. All four people were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The investigations office was notified shortly after the collision.
The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
