The programme will include Imant Raminsh鈥檚 lyrical and harmonious String Quartet No. 3 and Antonin Dvorak鈥檚 romantic and spirited Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 81, with piano played by Marcel. Together, the quartet and Bergmann Duo will also play a fiery version of Astor Piazzolla鈥檚 tangos, Milonga del Angel and Libertango.
鈥凌补尘颈苍蝉丑鈥檚 String Quartet No. 3 was written especially for the Borealis Quartet,鈥 said Yuel Yawney, the quartet鈥檚 violinist. 鈥淚t is inspiring to have the opportunity to discover the voice of the composer. We love the process of exploring the music together and experimenting in search of new sonorities and colours.鈥
鈥凄惫辞谤补办鈥檚 Piano Quintet op.81 is one of the great masterpieces of the romantic chamber literature and has been among my favourite personal musical discoveries,鈥 said Marcel. 鈥淧iazzolla鈥檚 tangos are also an unusual combination of string quartet and two pianos. The beautiful, melancholic atmosphere of the Milonga del Angel is a contrast to the lively and driving ostinato-rhythms of the famous Libertango.鈥
The Borealis String Quartet, founded in Vancouver in 2000, features violinists Patricia Shih, Yuel Yawney, and Nikita Pogrebnoy, as well as cellist Sungyong Lim. The ensemble has sold out concerts around the world and performed for the likes of the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and the prime minister of Canada.
The Bergmann Duo, too, have performed across North America and Europe, including recent appearances in Munich and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Both Marcel and Elizabeth Bergmann are directors at LCMS.
