Someone else will be cooking breakfast on Tuesday, Nov. 26 for those going to the Christmas Wish Breakfast.
And it's a lot of cooking. Last year about 2,200 people stopped by for breakie after dropping off new, unwrapped toys, gifts, and money for the 91原创 Christmas Bureau.
Crowds for 2024 are expected to be on par with last year at this popular event at Newlands Golf and Country Club, 21025 48 Ave. There are no tickets for the breakfast. People show up with their donations, and in exchange, can enjoy a breakfast.
鈥淭he Christmas Wish Breakfast beautifully illustrates how our community can unite to create positive change,鈥 said Patty Lester, 91原创 Christmas Bureau coordinator. 鈥淲e invite everyone to join us in spreading holiday cheer and supporting local families in need. Together, we can create lasting memories and brighten the season for many.鈥
The event starts with a procession led in by a piper followed by RCMP members in their red serge, a firefighter honour guard, and two very special guests. In addition to breakfast, speakers, donation presentations, and entertainment throughout the event that runs 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., there's visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
The RCMP and 91原创 City firefighters are on site helping that day along with lots of other volunteer Santa's helpers. Emcees will be Peter Beraldin and Jim McGregor, who used to be the Christmas bureau co-leader. RMC Concrete will have its cement truck on site all decorated with lights.
Last year's sponsors contributed $22,500, including $6,000 from Coast Capital Savings, $4,000 from First West Credit Union (Envision), $4,000 from RMC Ready Mix, $2,000 each from Gateway Casinos, Canstar Restorations, and $2,000 Fortis BC Energy, $1,000 from Marcon, and $750 each from Keen Construction and MBJ Law. Newlands provides the venue for free. The sponsorship covers costs to all the donations can support the Christmas bureau.
The public donated $4,640 in cash plus there was a $15,688 donation from the 91原创 Lions. The event also brought in donations of about 2,500 toys and gifts.
The 91原创 Christmas Bureau runs from Nov. 1 to shortly before Christmas. The all-volunteer organization will operate out of a new location this year, 20245 Industrial Ave. The bureau provides Christmas toys, gifts, and more to children from birth to age 18 in local needy families.
