Upcycling is about much more than simply recycling, said Krista Daniszewski.
The sustainable programs specialist for 91ԭ Township said upcycling is about turning an old item into something entirely new, without breaking it down to its basic components, as happens in recycling.
An exhibition of upcycled materials – from the practical to the fantastical – is running again this year through the Upcycling Design Challenge.
The partnership of the Township and the 91ԭ Arts Council has been drawing eco-friendly artists to turn trash into treasures since 2013.
“It’s really amazing what type of item people are able to create,” said Daniszewski.
This year, the theme of the challenge was old furniture and components. Other categories include Best in Show, Most Practical, and Best Youth (ages 10 to 17). Category winners will receive cash prizes.
A People’s Choice Award and a $500 Willowbrook Gift Card will also be presented for the piece receiving the most votes from those who view the entries in the mall.
An exhibit of the pieces is at Willowbrook until April 29. Viewers can vote for their favourite piece until 7 p.m. on April 26. An awards reception will be held Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 8 p.m., to recognize the winners.
