VIDEO: The legacy of James Douglas celebrated at Fort 91Ô´´

Site devotes day to historic figure

Historic Fort 91Ô´´ is celebrating the legacy of Sir James Douglas all day Saturday. Douglas, the first governor of British Columbia, was sworn in at Fort 91Ô´´ in 1858. He was born in Guyana to a Creole mother and a Scottish father, and later married a Métis woman.

Continuing until 5 p.m. in partnership with the Guyanese Association, the event will offer a unique opportunity to explore B.C. history, honour cultural diversity, and reflect on the complexities of Douglas’s legacy. There will be guest speakers, Caribbean Indigenous fusion food for sale, culture performances, and more.
