VIDEO: Poultry creates quite a flap at 91原创 library

Large crowd turned out for 4-H presentation at Murrayville branch

The feathers were flying at the Murrayville Library Friday.

The Otter Flying Feathers 4-H Club members brought some of their two- and four-footed friends for a presentation.

More than 70 people, mostly kids, attended and had the opportunity to meet a large white duck, chickens, white, golden and brown quail, and rabbits, as well as learn about the gardening and craft/sewing projects available to members.

Dylan Singh introduced many of the young audience members, who have never had a chance to see these animals up close, to various birds.

Being in the club gives him a chance to work with animals.

鈥淚 like sharing to the public with the animals, and I like to socialize with the other members because you can talk to the stuff, and then you can teach me,鈥 he said.

He鈥檚 done various poultry projects as a member of 4-H.

Children could also go home from the event with a chicken bookmark, and thanks to members of the Alphabeas Calligraphy Guild, the bookmarks had personalized calligraphy.

For assistant leader Cassandra McMaster the visit to the library was a chance to spotlight the youth group which is open to any child, not just those who live in rural areas.

鈥淲e could educate the public not only on 4-H itself, but also on poultry, quails, gardening what it鈥檚 like to live on a farm, basically all the benefits of them,鈥 she said.

The library invited the club back in August and the visit was timed to coincide with a Pro-D Day so the kids were off school.

She鈥檚 pleased with the reception the club received and how enthused the kids in the audience were to meet the animals. McMaster said she鈥檚 open to the club visiting more local library branches.

鈥淚 think it was quite a success,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was fantastic.鈥

The Murrayville branch next hosts animal visitors for Parrots in the Library. The Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary will be bringing birds for an educational presentation 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10. People wanting to attend must sign up in advance online through fvrl.bc.ca or by calling the branch.
