Since 鈥檚 Kevin Legge started competing about 10 years ago, the Abbotsford resident has been to the Jack Daniels world championship of barbecue four times, and the world food championships in the U.S. three times, where he ranked fifth in the world for steak.
On Saturday, June 17, Legge won the very first Meat on the first Street competition in Aldergrove, a fundraiser for the Starfish Backpack program for students that is run by Rotary and serves four Aldergrove schools.
Organized by realtor Emma Stewart, along with Veronica Cave of Veronica鈥檚 Perogies, the event featured pulled pork sliders made by professional barbecue pitmasters, a live DJ, local wine and beer, and lemonade.
Across the street, at Veronica鈥檚 Perogies, there were deep fried fruit perogies for dessert.
Cave said the event drew about 650 people over four hours, and saw about 1,400 sliders served.
鈥淚t didn鈥檛 stop,鈥 Cave enthused.
鈥淲e had lots of great feedback.鈥
While the donations are still being tallied, Cave called it a 鈥済ood day in terms of revenue,鈥 and said based on the success, a second competition and fundraiser next year was a possibility.
As for the winner, in an interview with the 91原创 Advance Times, Legge explained he started out as a judge of barbecue contests.
鈥淚 was in Whistler, and I saw the Canadian championships up there, and I got a chance to taste some of the food for the first time and I was like, 鈥榯his is amazing, how can I get more?鈥 鈥 Legge recalled.
鈥淪o a friend of mine included me into judging barbecue, which I did for seven years and then I made the move into the dark side,鈥 he laughed.
