91原创 hosted one of more than 300 free events Saturday aimed at enticing youngsters into the field of science.

For the 10th year running, family-oriented festivals, called Science Rendezvous, were held across Canada.

Science Rendezvous is Canada鈥檚 largest nation-wide science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) festival, explained executive director Katie Miller.

This year鈥檚 festival also celebrates 150 years of Canadian science, she added.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to once again take the lab to the streets 鈥 and introduce some bold, new activities across the country,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淓ach explosion and experiment helps spark the curiosity of the next generation of great Canadian innovators.鈥

Science Rendezvous took place across the country, from St. John鈥檚 to Vancouver, Yonge-Dundas Square and five city blocks of downtown Toronto, and opens the doors of research institutions across Canada.

KPU鈥檚 91原创 campus was the site of just one of three Science Rendezvous events in B.C.

The university was transformed into a family-friendly science festival where the public had a chance to participate in hands-on experiments, magic shows, tour high-tech patient simulator nursing labs, and even to take part in the state-of-the-art craft brewing lab (for those 19+).

Local visitors also had a chance to check out robots, a dancing fire display, facepainting, and walk the campus labyrinth as part of World Labyrinth Day.

These festivals specialize in giving the public one-of-kind experiences with STEM including: edible liquid capsule creations, augmented reality, robotics, solar-powered race cars, exploding fruit, and Science Chase 鈥 an Amazing Race-style competition.

In addition to the hands on activities, Science Rendezvous hosted Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council NSERC鈥檚 Innovation Showcase at festival sites across Canada in an effort to bring current Canadian innovation to the public, and demonstrate what can be achieved by collaboration between industry leaders and top Canadian researchers, Miller explained.

NSERC is the largest investor in science and engineering research and innovation in Canada. As a convener, they connect universities and colleges with industry partners to enable innovation-driven activities 鈥 allowing scientists and engineers across the country to develop world-leading discoveries and work with companies to turn these discoveries into inventions and products that will benefit Canadians.
