Car restoration is a family affair for 91Ô´´ Cruise-In award winners

Shine winner Rob Clough and his daughters were awarded at the 25th Cruise-In

Car restoration runs in Aldergrove's Clough family.

This year's Jimmy Shine Award winner Rob Clough purchased his winning 1956 Volkswagen from his father, Bob, just three years ago.

"The was originally a basic body shell, and pan [with] no interior, trim parts, seats, wiring, etcetera – just a shell. The body was kept as original as possible," he told The Star.

Clough installed a 1776 cc engine with a Rancho freeway flyer transmission and adjustable swing axle spring plates. The front beam was narrowed four inches, disk brakes installed, and the entire car was lowered substantially, he said.

Then, a custom leather interior was installed, as well as seats, head liner, and a German square weave carpet kit to complete the interior.

He said it felt surreal to win the Shine award.

"I felt honoured to be selected."

Clough added that he's looking forward to being part of the Shine Circle and all that comes with it.

"I've been into cars my whole life. I had multiple Volkswagens when I was younger. Over the decades I've been involved with multiple projects [including] hot rods, race cars, and classics," Clough said.

He added that its rewarding to work on something that's been in rough shape.

"It's also the challenge [of] finding the parts, and learn about that particular car's unique mechanical needs to get it back on the road."

His daughters, Alicia and Shaylin, were two of three winners for the new Good Young Guns award presented at the 91Ô´´ Good Times Cruise-In car show in September.

They both started helping their dad in the garage around age 14 and 15, he recalled.

Shaylin's 1967 Beetle was found also by Bob in Washington State in pieces with the engine in its front seat, Clough said. All three generations got to work restoring the car.

"Engine and transmission rebuild, new brake system, and flat clear coat added to capture and protect the body yet still show the original patina the car had," Clough explained.

His daughter Alicia's car was found in Arizona, U.S., and also needed an engine rebuild, new interior, and was repainted to its original factory orange.

"Everyone in the family – my wife Val included – has hours and hours into sanding and prepping the car for repaint," Clough commented.

His daughters were surprised to to receive the Good Young Guns award.

"Dad and I were over the top beaming with pride to see them up on the stage and getting recognized for the effort they put into their cars," Clough said.

"The award is a great addition to the show. Lordco, So-Cal Speed Shop, and Wreckless Restorations are to be thanked for supporting this award."

The Clough family has been attending Cruise-In since 2019 with Shaylin and Bob's cars, the first that were finished in time.

"It's a great show, massive in size, and so much fun to be a part of in my home town," Clough added.

For the next Cruise-In show, Clough is looking forward to participate in picking the next Shine winner.
