VIDEO: Crowds turn out for Family Day in 91原创

Records were set

Family Day on Monday, Feb. 19, drew crowds in 91原创, with record turnouts reported at various venues.

At the Canadian Museum of Flight, 2,513 visitors showed up between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., up from 1,741 the previous year, the most yet.

Cars full of visitors were still lining up at the museum late in the day, as volunteers tried to find spots for them to park, and dozens of vehicles ended up lined up along 216 Street outside the airport.

Bruce Friesen, president of the association that operates the museum, was delighted with the turnout.

鈥淲e think this museum is becoming known just through word of mouth,鈥 Friesen told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥淔amilies are telling friends that they enjoyed coming here and recommending their friends join us.鈥

Everett Tyrrell, 8, from Aldergrove, who was carrying his own biplane model, was fascinated with the aviation displays.

鈥淚 thought it would be nice to be a pilot in the cockpit,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 my dream.鈥

It was a similar story at other local sites, including the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre rink, which was packed with skaters, and at Fort 91原创 National Historic Site, where volunteer re-enactors were on hand to demonstrate history, while B.C. Field Ornithologists, 91原创 Field Naturalists and 91原创 Environmental Partners Society provided a day of bird-related activities.

The fort recorded 1,090 visitors, three times more than last year.

At the B.C. Farm Museum in Fort 91原创, Syd Pickerell, a member of the museum board of directors, was happy to see young people getting acquainted with the way things used to be.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just fun to show kids how how people enjoyed themselves, how they entertained themselves,鈥 Pickerell commented.

He said displays are continually being updated, as 鈥減eople keep donating items to us that they had, or their mother had, or their grandmother had, and we find a spot for it to show the younger generation just how people lived in the very early days before electricity and before phones and all of those good things.鈥
