VIDEO: Campaign for first responders comes to Aldergrove

Tour of Honour uses Humvee to raise awareness and funds

A campaign to raise funds for B.C.鈥檚 Honour House charity drew to a close in Aldergrove with two visits by a Humvee wrapped in the Canadian Disruptive Pattern (CADPAT), the computer-generated digital camouflage pattern developed for use by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Called the Tour of Honour, the B.C. wide journey by the Humvee began in April to bring attention to the illnesses and injuries that face those in uniform who keep civilians safe from harm, and to raise funds to support the charities鈥 two locations, .

On Wednesday June 14, the campaign arrived at Inland Kenworth 91原创 in Gloucester for its last stop, where it was greeted by fire, police and other first responders.

Al De Genova, honorary colonel of the 15th field artillery regiment, and president of honor house society, said the charity has paid off the cost of construction.

鈥淲e raised well over 6.5 million to build the home,鈥 De Genova explained.

鈥淲e have now paid that debt off and now we鈥檙e building our endowment.鈥

Brett Parker, Inland general manager said they have raised $150,000 through an initiative with one of their vendors, Link Belt.

鈥淲e decided that every Link Belt we sold, we donate $250,鈥 Parker told Black Press Media.

Firefighter Jason Linn, a captain with the Township department, stayed at Honour house 12 years ago.

鈥淢y child was born one pound, four ounces,鈥 he recalled.

鈥淚鈥檝e been an advocate ever since,鈥 Linn said.

鈥淲e inform all our new recruits about Honour House.鈥

On Saturday, June 10, the campaign received a $5,000 donation during a visit to the Royal Canadian Legion Aldergrove branch.

Deb Gray, president of the Legion鈥檚 Aldergrove branch, said members were 鈥渧ery pleased鈥 to contribute to the charity, which operates Honour House, located in New Westminster, and Honour Ranch, located near Ashcroft for first responders.

鈥淭hey are totally run by donations and their dedication to all our men and women in uniform, supporting all lines of first responders including military veterans, police, fire, ambulance, as well as their families, is truly inspiring,鈥 Gray commented.

Opened in 2010, provides, free of charge, a place to stay for members of emergency services, military personnel, veterans and their families when they are seriously ill or injured. It offers supportive mental health programs for those struggling with the effects of work-related stress.

It is a fully renovated heritage home, wheelchair-accessible, with 11 private bedrooms, a shared kitchen, living room, media room, sunrooms and other common spaces.
