Abbotsford resident Cory Hoffman didn鈥檛 know she鈥檇 been nominated for the Gandy Installations 鈥淔eel The Love鈥 initiative until Shannon Gandy phoned her from the 91原创-based business to tell her the news.
Hoffman had heard about the program that provides state-of-the-art heating and cooling system upgrades to deserving people 鈥 she鈥檇 even joked about getting a friend to nominate her.
Her granddaughter, Maddie Chamberlin, did just that, but decided not to tell her grandmother so she wouldn鈥檛 be disappointed if she didn鈥檛 get it.
鈥淒id you enter in the contest?,鈥 an amazed Hoffman asked Maddie.
鈥淲ell, yes I did,鈥 Maddie replied.
鈥淲hat did you tell them?鈥
鈥淓惫别谤测迟丑颈苍驳.鈥
How Maddie, 15, and her younger sister Payton, 13, ended up being raised by Cory, their grandmother, after they ended up in foster care.
How her grandmother gave up what Maddie describes as a 鈥渇ree life鈥 to become a full-time parent, again.
鈥淪he was driving a sports car, she was travelling,鈥 Maddie said.
鈥淪he鈥檚 really kind,鈥 Maddie told the 91原创 Advance Times.
鈥淚鈥檓 very grateful.鈥
Cory was in shock.
鈥淚 was crying, I was laughing, I was hugging this kid,鈥 she recalled.
Their house gets extremely hot during summer months, enough to melt candles without a flame.
Cory has seen the indoor thermostat climb all the way to 99 degrees, and has been told it would likely be even higher except for the fact the display was limited to that upper number.
A central cooling system would help, Maddie felt.
鈥淚 thought it would benefit everyone in the house,鈥 she said.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, Gandy general manager Taylor Gandy, along with a crew of volunteers from the company, showed up and installed a central air conditioning system.
鈥淚t鈥檚 great to see a family that really deserves it, get something they need,鈥滸andy said.
鈥淲e look forward to this every year.鈥
A grateful Cory baked them all muffins.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e just incredible,鈥 she said of the Gandy crew.
For the 鈥淔eel the Love鈥 initiative, the Lennox company provides brand new high-efficiency furnaces, and participating dealers across Canada and the U.S. donate the installation materials and labour, all free of charge to deserving nominees.

In 2021, a non-functioning furnace was replaced for a family of four.
