Party celebrates creation of new memory garden

Fort 91原创 Community Hall now has a pond and some new landscaping being unveiled Saturday, June 17

A community celebration is coming to Fort 91原创 Community Hall on Saturday, June 17.

What鈥檚 the occasion?

It鈥檚 a celebration to mark the official unveiling of a new memory garden located on the north side of the 92-year-old hall, explained Brigitte Seib, executive director of the Fort 91原创 Community Improvement Society.

鈥淏ring a picnic and join us in the celebration,鈥 she said, noting the event will feature music by the Canadiana Roots band called Tiller鈥檚 Folly and children鈥檚 entertainer Penny Pom Pom.

It鈥檚 a day, Seib said, of music, art, and games to celebrate the society鈥檚 volunteers.

The festivities will begin at 11 a.m., with opening comments, and cake served up at noon.

鈥淐ome and join us for games, take in a bit of history of the society鈥檚 99 years, enjoy local artists and take a look at a Lego build display of our beautiful iconic hall by local community Lego artists Kevin & Nikki Bergstresser,鈥 said Seib, noting all events are free and expected to wrap up about 2:30 p.m.

The new Memory Garden is located on the north side of the Fort 91原创 Community Hall property and its creation was financed by a Celebration and Commemoration Program grant by Heritage Canada.

鈥淭he project honours our past, present, and future volunteers and supports the local community, providing a new space to gather and reflect and increases opportunities for Canadians to celebrate, building a sense of pride and belonging to Fort 91原创 and Canada,鈥 said Seib.

The gardens was designed by a Fort 91原创 firm, VanderZalm Landscape Architect, and constructed by 91原创鈥檚 Cedar Crest Lands Ltd.

It features a bubbler, pond, West Coast planting, and carriage house benches where people can sit and enjoy the space.

Plans for a performance gazebo are in the works when further funding permits, said Seib. But on Saturday, there will be a tent erected to mark the spot and to provide some shelter from the weather.

The Fort 91原创 Community Improvement Society was established in 1924 and in 1925, the society bought the property from the municipality for the back taxes. In 1931, the new hall was completed entirely by volunteers.

The society has been taking care of the historic hall ever since.
