Over 2,600 Valentine's Cards made by 91原创 students for seniors

Annual program for seniors through 91原创 Volunteers

More than 2,600 Valentine's Day cards were designed and written by 91原创 students for local seniors this Feb. 14.

Lynda Fourchalk, the 91原创 Volunteer Bureau card program coordinator, said volunteers sorted the cards for delivery last week.

"The [program] has expanded considerably over the years, and we have more youth creating cards and more seniors receiving them," she said.

She noted that the kids get more creative every time with the cards. This Valentine's Day, some cards will have a message in Braille, puzzles, riddles, and drawings with messages.

"It's a wonderful way to connect the generations with an act of kindness that is received with such gratitude."

More than 250 were sent to Aldergrove legion members, and the rest to local senior organizations.

Fourchalk said these cards uplift the spirits of seniors and veterans in the community.

"The exceptional artwork and thoughtful messages created by students from the 91原创 School District and other groups in the area for our seniors continues to inspire us," Fourchalk commended.

She added that, since the Cards For Seniors program's inception, more than 32,000 cards have been made and delivered to local seniors at no cost.

"We are so grateful for the community's support," she said.

The program started during the pandemic to help combat the isolation some seniors were facing.

Fourchalk said it has continued 鈥渂ecause it鈥檚 just been so well received by teachers, students, and the [senior] facilities.鈥

Cards are also sent out on Easter, Remembrance Day, and Christmas.

"The Cards for Seniors Program is loved by all sides... It's a feel-good project for us all, and 91原创 Volunteer Bureau is proud to sponsor the project," Fourchalk said.

, also known as 鈥91原创 Volunteers鈥, is now a registered charity, formed to promote the value of volunteering and to connect volunteers in the community with organizations who need them.

Anyone who would like to register a senior or volunteer with the program can email cardsforseniors@langleyvolunteers.ca or visit .
