Ostrich egg painting will help Aldergrove zoo animals

The event is open to all ages, but parents must remain with their children

Funds raised from ostrich egg painting this Easter will be used for animal enrichment at the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

The public can book one-hour egg decorating sessions on April 18, 19, 20, or 21. Sessions are available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

"The eggs are from our two female ostriches Omari and Oat. We don't have any male ostriches, so all the eggs were unfertilized," explained Michael Jacobsen, the zoo's marketing and communications manager. "Each egg has already been hollowed out and sanitized."

Ostrich eggs are rounder than chicken eggs and about 20 times larger.

"The shells of ostrich eggs are notably thicker and stronger, too," he added.

The cost is $75 per egg, but the promo code 'springbreak25' brings the price down to two eggs for $125. Book through the zoo website.

"This is an all-ages event, but parents must be present with their children," Jacobsen said.

Acrylic paints and painting tools are provided.

"You can pick up your egg at the end of the day, after it dries, or a later date," he said. "Painted eggs will be packaged, with a stand, in a padded box padded for safe transport. Guests are welcome to donate their egg for decoration, here at the zoo."
