New 91原创 event celebrates literacy

New free family-oriented event takes over Timms Community Centre

The Literacy Fair is for all ages as a way to celebrate Literacy Month which is September.

The new event fund 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Timms Community Centre, 20399 Douglas Cres., and is free to attend. This new event is aimed at helping people understand more about literacy and the impact on people's lives as well as show the public what programs and services are available.

"Literacy is woven into all parts of our lives. More than 75 per cent of British Columbians have difficulty with literacy. This fair is a way of bringing to light the opportunities our network can share with the community," said Donna Gibson, adult literacy outreach coordinator with the 91原创 Literacy Network.

People who attend will find books, of course, and more.

In addition to the take a book, leave a book table, there will be information on adult and family literacy programs. People can also find out about volunteer opportunities at the 91原创 Literacy Network, which has organized the event in partnership with several other local groups, including the City, Decoda Literacy Solutions, Timms Centre, the Fraser Valley Regional Library Network City branch, and volunteers. Gibson and Kayla Powell, the family literacy outreach coordinator, have planned the fair.

"We have two local authors attending the event. Rashda Munawar, author of 'Think Big', will be doing a reading of her children鈥檚 book in the library at 11 a.m. and [people can meet] Sandy McLeod with her book 'Howie Finds a New Home'," Gibson said.

In the Timms Centre gym, the City and Pacific Sports have organized physical literacy activities, and throughout the community centre is a StoryWalk called Sweetgrass. Pages from a children鈥檚 book are attached to signs along a path, in this case, within the Timms Centre. People read the story as they move about the building. Most StoryWalks are out of doors and accessible to the public, and 91原创 has them at Lynn Fripps Elementary, the Muckle Creek Trail (on the west side of Simonds Elementary), and Parkside Centennial Elementary.

In addition to a welcome display for the City branch of the Fraser Valley Regional Library, there will be an "I Love Reading" photo booth, as well as green screen fun, draws, prizes, and crafts and activities for children within the library.

Gibson explained that there will be activities for the children to keep them occupied so the adults can speak to the various agencies and groups at the event.

The literacy network offers one-on-one literacy education, and StoryWalks, as well as providing books to children registered with the 91原创 Christmas Bureau.

"Our Network members from the community attend with tables to share community information," Gibson explained. "The literacy network will be sharing information about family and adult programs as well as volunteer opportunities."
