Lodge holds aging health seminars

91原创 Lodge has organized a public education series that puts the spotlight on health care topics that relate to aging and wellness.

Whether we like it or not, old age and the health challenges that it often imposes will creep up on us and those we love the most. Being prepared takes the guess work out of the transition, eliminates fights around the bedsides of the dying, and helps those whose journeys take them to a long-term care facility.

With these points in mind, 91原创 Lodge has organized a public education series that puts the spotlight on healthcare topics that relate to aging and wellness.

The series, the second put on by the 91原创 City long-term care home, will be of interest not only to seniors and those approaching their golden years, but also caregivers, said 91原创 Lodge executive director Debra Hauptman.

The three sessions, all of which are free, start at 7 p.m. and are held at the Lodge. Light refreshments will be served.

All speakers are experts in their field, Hauptman said.

The first, to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, is titled What is Dementia? and features Rose Puszka, education co-ordinator of the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Cari Hoffman of the Fraser Health Authority, and Dayna Driscoll, a 91原创 Lodge social worker, will speak on Advance Care Planning. This, Hauptman explained, will help people avoid difficulties and discord should the time come when someone cannot communicate their wishes or make their own decisions.

鈥淚t鈥檚 clear that effective planning is the best way to make sure your views are known and respected by your loved ones and health care providers,鈥 she said.

The last session, Navigating the Long Term Care System, will be on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Guest speaker Michelle Sordal, an FHA nurse, will provide information showing how to find and receive information on long-term care for family members.

Each speaker鈥檚 presentation will last approximately 45 minutes, and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

The third series, which begins in January, will focus on financial and safety issues as they relate to older people.

People interested in attending the sessions which begin next month are asked to call 91原创 Lodge at 604 532-4241.
