September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month and the local program is using it to spotlight the work it does for youth.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of 91原创 staff and volunteers gathered at 91原创 City hall for a brief ceremony and flag raising Friday, Sept. 13.

"It has a strong impact in our community," said executive director Roslyn Henderson.

She said having a special month is meant to spotlight the work mentors do with local young people, more than 450 locally.

In addition to one-on-one mentoring, the local group offers in-school mentoring as well as the program Game On for boys and Go Girl for girls. They focus on physical activity, self-esteem, life skills, and emotional health. School's Out Explorations allows kids to explore creative activities while School's Out Multi-Sport Explorations allows kids to try out many different sports.

Henderson noted that the mentors are the backbone of the program, and strong community support allows Big Brothers Big Sisters to offer programs tailored to children.

The organization will host The Big Social, on Oct. 5 at the Koop, 23921 68 Ave. The new fundraising event will have performances by Karen Lee Batten, Tony Stevens, and Amy Bakker as well as tastings of wine, beer and spirit tastings from more than 12 local craft vendors.
