91原创 Township rounding up household hazardous materials at two-day event

Popular hazardous materials drop-off event returns on the Oct. 19 and 20 weekend

Township residents needing to get rid of household hazardous waste such as pesticides, flammable liquids, motor oil, electronics, batteries, solvents, light bulbs, and more can do so Oct. 19 and 20.

These items cannot be put into landfills nor dumped down the drain.

Residents can drop off these items during the Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection Event in the east parking lot of the George Preston Recreation Centre from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There is no cost to drop off items.

鈥淭his annual event is a chance for Township residents to drop-off hazardous household items that take up space in their home, and the Township will safely recycle or dispose these items free-of-charge,鈥 said Christopher Combe, environmental sustainability coordinator for the Township. 鈥淢any of these household products contain materials that become dangerous if they are disposed of improperly in the trash, buried, flushed down the toilet, or poured down the sink.鈥

People don't even have to get out of their vehicles to dispose of the items at the event. The drop-off will be in the east parking lot of George Preston Recreation Centre, 20699 42 Ave. Access to the drop-off area is via southbound on 208 Street only. Visitors are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items for the Aldergrove Food Bank.

During the event, staff will unload waste from vehicles, but only items retrievable from truck beds or vehicle trunks/hatches will be accepted. Items passed through doors or windows will not be accepted, and all liquid items must be in secure containers and cannot be leaking.

Anyone planning to attend is encouraged to review the Preferred Packing Order diagram at tol.ca/hhw to show the way to load the items in their vehicles. Walk-ins will not be permitted.

The Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection Event attracts hundreds of vehicles each year, and lineups are possible.

Some of the most common items dropped-off at the event, such as motor oil, paint, thermostats and smoke alarms, and small appliances are easily recycled elsewhere, year-round and free-of-charge, thanks to provincial recycling programs

To learn more about items that can be returned all year long and where to bring them, visit tol.ca/takeitback.

The Household Hazardous Waste Plus Collection event is for Township of 91原创 residents only. Proof of Township residency (such as a driver鈥檚 licence or utility bill) is required.
