An afternoon of spirits, cocktails, and goodies, and live entertainment is on tap as the Rotary Club of 91原创 Sunrise works to raise money for its Starfish Packs.

鈥淭he Rotary Club of 91原创 Sunrise has been involved in raising funds for the Starfish Packs since 2017 so we formed the North 91原创 Starfish Pack Program,鈥 explained June Jones, spokesperson with the club.

This fundraiser takes place Saturday, June 8, at Roots & Wings Distillery between 1 and 5 p.m. The event is open to all ages.

鈥淓ach year we try to do something differently,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ur first few years we did a fundraiser for Starfish Packs called Taste of Fort 91原创, and last year we did a burger and beer fundraiser at Jimy Mac鈥檚 Pub. This year we were approached by Roots & Wings Distillery to host our fundraiser. The owners have been contributors of our program for the previous two years.鈥

Tickets are $50 apiece and available in a few different ways. People can contact Ashley Chalmers by text or call to 604-999-4341. Tickets can also be purchased at Roots & Wings Distillery, 7897 240 St., or at the event if there are any remaining. Chalmers is also the person to contact for anyone wanting to contribute to the silent auction, or make a donation to the Starfish Pack program. The event is supported by the distillery, Haven Kitchen and Bar, and The Barley Merchant.

During the afternoon, people will be entertained by Amanda Staynyer, who sings and plays guitar. They will also find out more about the food program for children.

鈥淲e supply 25 packs to five different elementary schools in the North 91原创 area that includes Willoughby, Fort 91原创 and Walnut Grove area. Each Starfish Pack Program [such as the United Churches of 91原创 and the Aldergrove Rotary Club] are all independent and do their own targeted fundraising,鈥 Jones said.

Families who receive the packs are anonymous, and the arrangements to provide the packs to those particular schools is handled through the 91原创 School District Foundation.

Each pack is filled with two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners as well as some snack items. The cost is $25 per pack, and they are given out 40 weeks of the year.

鈥淓ach year it costs $1,000 to sponsor one child for the school year,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e ensure each pack contains a variety of fresh produce and protein.鈥

The packs are delivered to the elementary schools on Fridays so the children can take them home for food over the weekends. They are filled by Walnut Grove Secondary School student volunteers, she added.
