91原创 RCMP's first open house a huge hit with public

Local Mounties marked the 50th anniversary of women in the force with a big public event

Big crowds turned out for the 91原创 RCMP open house, starting as soon as the event opened at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 8.

The public had a chance to learn about the local detachment in Murrayville and the work of the RCMP as well as some of the integrated teams that do specialty tasks in the region. It was a chance for the public to learn about the inner workings of the police in this community and a chance for the RCMP to shine a spotlight on itself while marking the 50th anniversary of women joining the force.

Const. Dennis Bell was one of the local RCMP members taking part in the open house. He and others gave public tours of the detachment's cells, showing such things as where fingerprints and photos are taken and the several rooms where people in custody are kept.

"Basically they're just asking how long somebody would be here, what's the process of somebody being here, those are the main two questions," he said.

Crowds watched at the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) did precision motorcycle riding while people with oily skin learned that the forensics unit would pull up their fingerprints on paper. Members of the public were asked to rub their fingers on their foreheads then touch paper which was dusted for prints. They were then given the paper to take home as as keepsake. The forensics members also showed how they detect such things as blood or metal in various environments.

Bomb disposal unit members showed off their remote control robots, only in law enforcement, the remote controls are the size of a suitcase. There were bike patrol members, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (anti-gang unit), police dog service, and emergency response team, as well some plain old fun, such as a dunk tank, crafts, games, the RCMP mascot, and ever-popular pizza.
