Get the dancing shoes ready, because the ninth annual Brookswood Secondary School Swing Night and Dance is right around the corner, along with live music, a fun silent auction, treats and more.
The event at Brookswood Secondary on Friday will be helping raise money for the school鈥檚 music department.
鈥淎ll of our instrumental ensembles will be participating,鈥� said BSS music director Derrick Turi. 鈥淒oug Makela鈥檚 Big Band is our guest instrumental group. All of the repertoire will be based on swing, big band and dance music.鈥�
Doors will be open at 6 p.m., and the night will be kicked off with the concert bands warming up things from six to 7 p.m. Following that will be an exciting swing dance lesson from 7 to 8 p.m. The night will conclude with the Junior and Senior Jazz Bands hitting up a beat for everyone.
Tickets can be pre-ordered at $8 for students and $10 for adults, or purchased at the door for $12 for everyone. Students must show their current school ID upon entering to receive the reduced price.
The BSS Music Department is rapidly expanding and have gained a reputation of having great ensembles and skilled musicians. Their musical courses include concert bands, jazz bands, music composition and now musical theatre orchestra.
Over the years the Brookswood Musical Theatre Company has staged almost 10 musicals, including Oliver, Grease, Legally Blonde, and The Addams Family with the live orchestra made up entirely of the school鈥檚 talented music students.
At the recent Kiwanis Music Festival, the BSS Music Department earned four gold medals and will be heading to the Fraser Valley International Kiwanis Music Festival for performances.
The students participated in Disney鈥檚 Recording Sessions Workshop when the music students went to the Enchanted Kingdom two years ago. The senior musicians also travelled to Italy for 10 days this school year.
鈥淭his year we went to Whistler for the Con Brio festival and next year we are looking into another tour possibly to Eastern Europe including Hungary and Austria,鈥� Turi added.
