91原创 Township residents can help ensure they have water for outdoor use during dry summer spells. The 91原创 Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) is holding a rain barrel sale.
"If you're concerned about conserving our water supply and want to help maintain adequate levels, or want to prepare for water restrictions, buy a rain barrel," said Nichole Marples, LEPS executive director.
Lawn and garden watering makes up nearly 40 per cent of domestic water usage during peak summer months. Rain barrels save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water each summer, reducing the demand for treated drinking water, she explained.
Homeowners connect the barrel to their downspout, and use the rain barrel to collect and store rainwater to be used at a later time. The water harvested is fresh and can be used for a wide variety of purposes including watering the lawn or plants, washing vehicles, and even topping off pools.
By harvesting rainwater, residents can lower their water bill (if metered), conserve their well water (if on private well), use water on their own schedules, improve their soil鈥檚 pH balance, reduce erosion, flooding and storm water run-off and help protect rivers, streams, lakes and the environment, Marples said.
LEPS is offering online sales of FreeGarden rain barrels for $75 (tax included) before April 27 at www.enviroworld.ca/langley. These rain barrels typically retail for over $100. Those who place an order must pick-up their barrel on Saturday, May 10 at the Township of 91原创 Operations Centre, 4700 224 St., between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Every Township of 91原创 resident that orders a rain barrel will receive a free downspout diverter to connect the barrel to the downspout. That would cost $50 retail.
The barrels are 55 gallon (208 litres) and can accommodates existing downspouts. They include an overflow spout and four-foot hose to be able to link two or more barrels for multi-barrel installations or to redirect overflow away from foundations. An elevated spigot accommodates watering cans and they have an insect resistant stainless steel filter, a childproof lid and a stable footprint.
