91原创 Arts Council celebrates culture with music and dance

Celebration of Culture month-long event series begins Saturday, March 8

91原创 Arts Council will be presenting a wide range of performers at the third annual 鈥淐elebration of Culture鈥 event throughout March at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre.

Beginning March 8, each Saturday in March will feature a variety of cultural performances. 

The events aim to celebrate diversity through hands-on cultural programming, said events coordinator Deepika Pandian.

"It has been an exciting journey putting together our biggest celebration of culture yet! his year, we're thrilled to showcase an amazing lineup of performances and can't wait for the community to come together and celebrate the vibrant beauty and diversity of cultures in our area," she told The Star. 

Saturday, March 8, begins with a spring roll making workshop at 11 a.m., followed by a lantern making lesson for both adults and youth with artist Diane Espiritu from noon to 3 p.m.

The afternoon features African music and dance by Nwkali at 1:30, and wraps up with folklore tales at 2:30 p.m.

The following Saturday, March 15, kicks off with an exploration of instruments at 11 a.m., followed by an Indonesian shadow puppet workshop at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. 

At 12:30 p.m., Arnie (Lek鈥檋oosh) Leon will perform an Indigenous flute and eagle dance. 

On March 22, LAC hosts Sweet Pan Entertainment for Caribbean rhythms at 11 a.m., followed by Scottish Highland bagpipes and dance at 12:45 p.m.

The day wraps up with Persian music by the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra at 2:15 p.m.

The final Saturday, March 28, features a workshop with Chef Sarah Mierau on Indigenous plant medicine at 11:30 a.m. 

New this year, on Sunday, March 29, is a cultural artisan market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with more than a dozen vendors selling crafts, food, and more. 

Live music will be performed at 11 a.m. by Silk Road Duo, at 1:30 p.m. by O'Carolan Celtic Ensemble, and at 3 p.m. by Nova Sol. 

Arts Coordinator Mimi Soo said she is looking forward to the line-up of events this year. 

"This event is a wonderful opportunity for neighbours to connect, share stories, and learn more about each other's cultures and backgrounds," she said.
