KPU students Wilson Chu and Francisco Hwang won top honours at the US Open College Beer Championship.

Students in the brewing program at Kwantlen Kwantlen Polytechnic University's (KPU) 91原创 campus have brought home two gold medals and a silver at this year鈥檚 US Open College Beer Championship.

KPU also tied for second place overall in the competition against 11 different schools across Canada and the United States

鈥淭his is a big deal,鈥 commented Dr. Brett Favaro, Dean of the Faculty of Science. 鈥淚鈥檓 very proud of our students for winning these prestigious awards, and of our faculty and staff whose mentorship and instruction have made this program an internationally-recognized success.鈥

KPU grads Wilson Chu and Francisco Hwang won gold in the competition鈥檚 International Style Pilsners category for the Student Signature Series brew Happy Hoppy.

鈥淲inning a gold medal for Happy Hoppy is an incredible honour,鈥 says Hwang. 鈥淎lthough I鈥檓 still a novice brewer, this recognition serves as a tremendous motivator for me to continue to improve my skills and push the boundaries of what I can achieve.鈥

The KPU-crafted Harvest Rice Saison beer was another hit, tying for the title 鈥淏est in Show鈥 with Niagara College and winning gold in the French and Belgian Saison category.

A Korean-inspired beer, it was developed by students Hyang (Su) Kim, Hyorae (Harry) Kim, Francisco Hwang, Donghwan Chang and alumnus Thomas Nickel.

First-year students at KPU got a taste for success by securing a silver medal in the Non-Alcoholic Stout category.

This isn鈥檛 the first time KPU Brewing has shined at this competition, with students triumphing in various categories since 2017.

In 2019, KPU was named Grand National Champion as the school that brews the best beers in North America.

The U.S. Open College Beer Championship is held every spring. Registration typically opens in March and runs until late May. Judging is typically held the first weekend in June, and the results are usually announced the second Monday of July.

Student-brewed craft beers are available for purchase every Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. at the KPU Brew Lab, which is located at KPU鈥檚 91原创 campus, 20901 91原创 Bypass.
