Firefighters pose with pets to aid LAPS shelter

An ideal gift suggestion for the firefighter or animal lover in one's life

For just a mere $20, local residents can purchase a Christmas gift that can be present in a recipient's daily lives throughout 2025, plus this gift keeps giving in the form of financial aid for two local charities.

Once again the Township of 91Ô´´ Firefighters' Charitable Society has produced a calendar – but it's not the traditional steamy firefighter calendar one might expect.

For the 10th year in a row, the society has created a calendar featuring firefighters and animals, said director Zach Funk. And specifically, again this year, the calendar features 13 pictures of the members with their own pets.

Half the proceeds from calendar sales go to the 91Ô´´ Animal Protection Society (LAPS) â€“ which operates the Patti Dale Animal Shelter in Aldergrove. The other half of the revenue goes to the firefighter society for its various charitable endeavours including supporting a snack program for local students through the 91Ô´´ School District Foundation, fundraising for the local hospice and hospital foundation, as well as contributing to B.C. Professional Firefighters Association Burn Fund and Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

"If you support our calendar, you're supporting all our programs," said Funk, a society directors who's been a Township firefighter for four years and an active participant in the calendar fundraiser for three years.

"We have a great team who work throughout the year on the calendar," he explained, noting photos for this year's calendar were all taken over three different days in June at the firefighter training grounds in Murrayville. The photos were once again taken by fellow Township firefighter Stefan Jones.

"We put out the call to our members, and anyone who wanted to bring their pets was welcome," Funk said, noting he wasn't among this year's 20 posing firefighters. He joked that he has "a face for radio," and has managed to avoid the camera for a few years now. He last appeared in the calendar, himself, in 2023.

"This year it was quite popular," he noted, which makes it hard for the selection committee to pick the images that would adorn the December to December calendar.

The calendars were distributed to local stores for sale at the end of November, and Funk is hopeful they will once again sell out, noting quantities are limited, with only 450 printed this year.

While supplies last, the calendars are available from LAPS at 26220 56 Ave., Otter Co-op at 248 Street and Fraser Highway, Shoppers Drug Mart's Willoughby south store at 200 Street and 64 Avenue, as well as the Shoppers Drug Mart in Murrayville – at 222 Street and 50 Avenue, plus Sorora Medical at 200 Street and 84 Avenue, and Dead Frog Brewing at 88 Avenue and 201 Street.
