Blackberries bake up swell for annual education event

.

Mini vanilla cupcakes with blackberries, fudge, blackberry lime cheesecake, blackberry and mint chutney, brownies – the menu reads like a foodie festival.

But these were just a few of the more than a dozen dishes turned in for sampling and judging at the annual Blackberry Bakeoff hosted by the 91Ô´´ Environmental Partners Society (LEPS).

"Great to see the community come out for this fun annual event. Lots of tasty treats as always!," said organizer Alexandra Falconer, the garden program coordinator with LEPS.

On Thursday, Aug. 22, the event, held since 2002, brought together members of the community at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum for an afternoon of treats, education about the invasive Himalayan blackberry, a barbecue, live music, and crafts.

Winners:

• Garima Wilson - 1st place
• Jennie Jiang - 2nd place
• Nichole Marples - 3rd place
• Jordan Munday - People's Choice
• Rosetta Calado - Kid's 1st place
