D.W. Poppy Secondary's musical production of 'The Wizard of Oz' kicks off Thursday, Feb. 27, and runs until March 8.
For Grade 9 student Isla Crowley, it's her first play and she's cast as main character Dorothy Gale. She was inspired by her older brother's passion for theatre in previous years.
"I originally thought I wanted to be the assistant stage manager but then I decided to challenge myself and try for the lead and I鈥檓 happy I did because it鈥檚 been a wonderful experience," Crowley shared.
She added that her character, Dorothy, has big dreams and Crowley shares that.
Playing the Scarecrow is Grade 11 student Dylan Leifso, who has been in theatre for almost four years.
"I joined 'The Wizard of Oz' play because I have been in the musical program for the past few years and, I mean, once you鈥檙e in the musical program, there鈥檚 no quitting!" she laughed.
"But I also just genuinely love both musicals and this musical in particular."
Leifso says she appreciates her character's sincerity and the idea of being more than just "smart or stupid."
She's most looking forward to the bittersweet tradition of saying goodbye to graduates on closing night.
"It is a very special moment," Leifso said.
Starring as the Wizard is Grade 12 student Sebastian Barnes, who has been in theatre since elementary school. Since he graduates this year, he didn't want to miss the last opportunity to do a musical at D.W. Poppy.
"I have always related to wizards and magical characters because of how they use knowledge and trickery to win rather than strength," Barnes shared.
He added that he most enjoys the camaraderie of the cast and joy of creating.
And the Wicked Witch is being played by Grade 11 student Kate Schmitke, which marks her fifth performance.
"Everyone in the program are friends, and it creates such a welcoming, fun environment that invites people in," she said about the production.
It's the second year the school has held a musical production, said director Alicia Robinson.
"We have absolutely loved watching these performers and our stage crew grow in their confidence and abilities this year. We appreciate how they can make us laugh during every rehearsal," she said.
Opening night is Thursday, Feb. 27. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. There is concession available during intermission.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at . The play is in the dramnasium at D.W. Poppy Secondary, 23752 52 Ave.
The production will also be held Feb. 28, until March 8.
