Local mom, Tiffany Daniel, and her team of volunteers from the Nate D Foundation are holding a poker tournament fundraiser at the Aldergrove legion on Saturday, Nov. 16.
All funds raised will support two 91原创 residents currently at a recovery program in Thailand, and also allow the charity to send a third 91原创 resident.
"We currently have two individuals in Thailand... and we want to extend their stay one extra month. And then we have another individual from 91原创 that we want to send as well," Daniel explained.
After her son, Nate, lost his life to the toxic drug supply, mom Daniel shifted her grief to keep his memory alive.
With the help of close friends, the was quickly formed.
Since then, the foundation has sponsored 10 people to attend trauma therapy in Thailand and many others to attend counselling locally.
Daniel explained that the program in Thailand goes beyond the typical 12-step program and gets to the root cause of a person's addiction.
Nate had been gifted a bed in a trauma therapy treatment centre located in Thailand in 2019, and the life 鈥渞eturned to his eyes鈥 his mom recalled.
鈥淭he trauma therapy approach in Thailand helped Nate learn how to process memories and emotions that were triggers,鈥 she said.
But when lock downs and isolation-related restrictions were placed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nate relapsed and passed away on Jan. 28, 2021.
To support others who are in similar situations, the foundation hosts a slo-pitch baseball tournament, celebrity fundraisers, and poker tournaments throughout the year to fund its sponsorships and counselling support.
Usually, players from the Canucks or BC Lions come out for the poker tournament, but won't make it this year due to games the same day.
"We were hopeful Kirk McLean and the boys were coming, but we ended up having to choose a Saturday where there's a Canucks game, so they can't make it this time," Daniel said.
"They can't make it this time but they're really good for that, all those guys always come out and support."
People can register ahead of the event online with a donation of $60 at .
Those not interested in poker, are still invited to enjoy the barbecue burgers with a donation at the door.
Doors open at 4:30, with burgers served starting at 5, and the poker game kicks off at 6 p.m.
The goal is to raise $10,000 to support the 91原创 residents.
鈥淭hrough our fundraising, we strive to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can find the help they need to thrive and survive,鈥 Daniel commented.
鈥淲e believe that every life is worth fighting for."
She also shared a thank you to the foundation's sponsors.
"Thank you to those that support our cause, we wouldn't be able to do what we do," Daniel said.
The legion is located at 26607 Fraser Hwy.
An online auction will also kick-off starting December through the foundation's website.
