Slice into National Pie Day with a piece of sweet or savoury

A sweet salute to a dessert staple

Vernon's Dora Davison of Davison Orchards, left, makes some of her legendary apple and pumpkin pies, with a helper, in 1999 at the Orchard's farm market. Today, Thursday, Jan. 23, is National Pie Day.

Apple. Cherry. Blueberry. Strawberry. Mincemeat. Pumpkin (blech). And the reporter's favourites, Boston and/or Coconut Cream, or his mom's homemade Graham Wafer (also known as Flapper).

It's National Pie Day today, so why not celebrate with a slice, or even a whole pie, of your favourite?

Remember the pies that came in cardboard boxes from a certain fast-food franchise that left a burn in your mouth for days, they were so hot?

This week's picture, courtesy of the Museum and Archives of Vernon, shows the always fabulous Dora Davison of Vernon's Davison Orchards fame, creating her apple and pumpkin masterpieces at the Orchard's farm market, along with a helper, in 1999. Lots of people would say Davison's has the best pies in the North Okanagan.

Statistics Canada, believe it or not, informs us there's a pie for all three meals in a day, and it's hard to argue with them.

There's quiche for breakfast; chicken pot pie for lunch and/or dinner, and lemon meringue (blech) pie for dessert. Pies, said StatsCan, can be sweet and savoury.

Using – naturally – a pie chart, StatsCan, on its , rounded up some its favourite pies less than two years ago, in November 2023, and found how much some of the ingredients to make them cost on average.

Some of the pies they looked at include apple, strawberry, banana cream, and lemon meringue for the sweet desserts.

For savoury pies, StatsCan looked at Tourtière, where a meat pie’s crust is filled with ground pork, spices and sometimes a binder. Tourtière du Lac-Saint-Jean is a similarly named savoury dish, consisting of cubed meat (or game), potatoes and onions, with a pie crust. The filling for this one is simmered for almost five hours in a Dutch oven.

They also viewed the cost in making chicken pot pie and quiche.
