Halifax Wanderers set a Canadian Premier League regular season record on Saturday night, Oct. 5 with 26 attempted shots against visiting Vancouver FC, including a late-in-the-game marker that ended the match with a 1-1 ties.

Vitor Dias scored in the eighth minute of stoppage time to salvage a draw at home, wrapping up a game where both sides ended with 10 men: Vancouver鈥檚 Elage Bah got a second yellow card in the 30th minute, and the Wanderers鈥 Zach Fernandez saw red in the 80th.

Despite playing a man down, Vancouver took the lead shortly after halftime as they won a penalty, which Alejandro D铆az converted to make it 1-0. They seemed to be on track for a season-defining away win that could clinch a payoff spot, but with their 26th shot of the game, Halifax finally scored at the very last moment to level the score.

As a result, both sides stayed alive but neither made much progress, either.

Before the game, Vancouver goalkeeper Callum Irving led the Canadian Premier League in saves with 80. By the end of it, his margin atop the leaderboard was 18, as he made 11 saves on Saturday afternoon, tying the single-game CPL record.

鈥淕oalkeeping is one of those jobs where you鈥檝e got to stay focused sometimes without having much to do, so you find ways to stay locked in, but on a day like today there鈥檚 no real time to breathe,鈥 Irving said postgame.

鈥淚 knew it was going to be tough coming here, they have a great crowd giving them a ton of energy. I came in prepared to try and play my role for the team and help in any way I could. Then unfortunately, I had to make a lot of saves. I don鈥檛 think anybody on our team likes it when we鈥檙e giving up that many shots, but ultimately when you鈥檙e a man down, it is what it is.鈥

Ghotbi described it as "probably the best performance of a goalkeeper I鈥檝e seen in the CPL.

"Different kinds of balls, different kinds of situations, he was always there. I鈥檓 really proud of him, and I鈥檓 really proud of how he鈥檚 stepped out of his comfort zone toward the end of the season, and his performance is only getting better and better.鈥

Irving was named player of the match.

"He鈥檚 probably by far one of the best goalkeepers in the league,"Ghotbi said of Irving.

"I think as he makes those small adjustments in his game, he will become one of the best goalkeepers in North America. Keepers mature late, they develop late, their best football is always in their 30's."

Only one other keeper has ever made 11 saves in one game, and that was now-Canadian national team and CF Montr茅al shot-stopper Jonathan Sirois, who did it in Valour鈥檚 1-0 loss to Halifax in July 2021

Vancouver FC are back at home for a crucial contest against Valour FC on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. as they continue their quest for a playoff spot.
