VIDEO: Ultra throw club hosts 91Ô´´ championship

Provincial record shattered

South Surrey's Dave Ulis won three trophies at the Ultra Throw club championships at 91Ô´´'s McLeod Athletic Park on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Ulis, competing in the 75-79 age category, won two trophies in the throws pentathlon (hammer, shot put, discus,  javelin,  weight throw) and one in the throws triathlon (shot put, discus, javelin) to be named athlete of the meet.

Abbotsford's Paramjit Gill, in the 65-69 category, was right behind him, winning his age category to finish second in overall scoring.

Saroop Tatla (M70) was third in the throws pentathlon and Alan Coles (M60) was third in the throws triathlon.

Shawn Stevens set a new provincial record with the outstanding throw of the meet in the last event of the day, and a personal best: a super weight toss (56 pounds)  of 7.36 metres, almost a full metre better than the previous record.

Stevens was awarded the Ultra Ambassador of the Year.

U16 girls hammer was a close one, with Megan Teolis (44.68m) just beating out Angelica Thiessen at 44.44m; the two Ultra athletes are ranked first and second in the province in the hammer throw for their age group.

Males and female competitors ranging in age from 11 to 75, took part in the all-day competition.

Club president Harnek SIngh Toor, 78, who has won literally hundreds of medals since he began competing in 2012, opted to sit the event out while he prepares for upcoming national, North American and World Masters events.

"We've got seven cups to be awarded" Toor told the 91Ô´´ Advance Times, explaining the annual event was a lead-in to the club's annual general meeting.

A full world championship event at the World Masters Athletics Championships, the throws pentathlon is a combined event in track and field that consists of five events; four Olympic throwing events – hammer throw, shot put, discus throw and javelin throw, as well as the weight throw.

Other highlights of the McLeod meet:

Jaanib Tatlay (16 years old) threw the 5kg shot 14.45m. Two other athletes put the shot past 10m: Meagan McKay (U18) put the 3kg shot 10.66m, just ahead of sister Kailey (U18) who was just 3cm behind at 10.63.

Tatley also launched the 1.5kg discus 35.55m with Paramjit Gill (M65) a close second, throwing the 1kg discus 33.24m.

Megan Teolis (U16) tossed the 3kg hammer 44.68m, closely followed by Angelica Thiessen (U16) at 44.44m.

Alan Coles (M60) beat all javelin throwers, launching the 600gr javelin 35..82m; followed by Meagan McKay (U18)) who threw the 500gr javelin 31.23m.
