All three levels of Thunder lacrosse play in 91原创 this week recorded wins, three nights in a row.

At the top level, in Western Lacrosse Action (WLA) on Wednesday at 91原创 Events Centre, the team downed the Coquitlam Adanacs 9-4.

A sensational effort from goaltender Frank Scigliano helped backstop the 91原创 Thunder to a third straight victory. He made 39 saves 鈥 including 20 in the second period alone 鈥 to earn first star honours.

The Thunder improved to 4-1 on the season while the Adanacs remain winless at 0-5.

For the season, Scigliano is allowing less than five goals per game (4.94), while also boasting a .895 save percentage, noted Thunder coach Curt Malawsky.

鈥淭hey had a lot of quality looks and Frank played 91原创enal. They had a lot of open looks and at the doorstep, he played exceptional,鈥 Malawsky said.

鈥淥ur defence is a work in progress; we are making some mistakes 鈥 hopefully we will clean those up and not make the same ones over and over again,鈥 he added. 鈥淏ut it wasn鈥檛 from a lack of effort; it is just learning the systems and key situations on the floor. But I thought Frank was the reason it was only four goals.鈥

91原创 trailed just once in the game, at 1-0, but the Coquitlam lead lasted less than two minutes as the Thunder responded with goals six seconds apart, the first from Dane Dobbie, and the latter courtesy of Nathan Bell, who won the face-off, took the ball to the net and gave his team the lead for good.

Nathan Bell leads the league in face-off percentage (50-20, .714) has two career WLA goals, both of which have come against the Adanacs.

鈥淎s soon as I saw both their players drop back on the forward, I knew straight away that I was going for it. I noticed that they locked off both players and that left me a perfect little slot to throw that ball,鈥 Bell said of the play which unfolded in front of him.

He made it 3-1 before the Adanacs answered back before the intermission for a 3-2 lead. Connor Robinson and Dobbie tallied the only goals of the middle stanza to make it 5-2 and the Adanacs were unable to get the deficit below three the rest of the way.

Robert Church (2+3) scored twice in the final period to cap off his five-point night and second star selection, while Curtis Dickson (1+3) and Jake Boudreau (1+1) also added goals.

Malawsky did say the team needs to work on its composure, citing the second period as an example, while adding they did a much better job of that in the final frame.

鈥淚 think we get a little upset with things we can鈥檛 control. Maybe the referee calls the odd mistake here and there 鈥 the frustration of the ball not going in the net; we just have to stick with that process that I preach about five minutes at a time. Just grind,鈥 Malawsky said.

鈥淚t is going to be a good lesson for us down the stretch as the season goes along here. We have to learn from that.鈥

Coquitlam鈥檚 Clark Walter was the game鈥檚 third star and both he and Maurice Kelly had a goal and two assists, while goaltender Andrew Gallant finished with 39 saves on 48 shots.

Next up for the Thunder was a road game in Burnaby on Friday against the Lakers, stay tuned for results of that evening game.

JUNIOR THUNDER HOLD OFF LAKERS 11-9

There would be no third-period letdown this time around.

For the second straight game, the 91原创 Thunder built a first-period lead, only to watch it slip away in the middle frame and then see their opponent seize control in the final 20 minutes.

On Tuesday night, the Junior A lacrosse club let a 4-1 lead turn into a tie game after two periods before the host New Westminster Salmonbellies scored seven unanswered goals for the 12-5 victory. That game was played at Queen鈥檚 Park Arena.

And on Thursday night, the Thunder welcomed the Burnaby Lakers to 91原创 Events Centre, and this time, 91原创 saw a 9-4 lead in the middle frame disappear as the Lakers clawed their way back to tie the game early in the third period. But Cody Malawsky popped home his third of the night for the game winner and Bailey Vanichuk added his second of the night in the final minute to seal the 11-9 victory.

Both Malawsky (3+2) and Vanichuk (2+3) finished with five-point games while Declan Fitzpatrick (2+2) also had a multi-goal game. Braiden Struss (1+1), Chase Schiavon, Hudson Zazelenchuk and Temeke7 Gottfriedsen had the other goals. Brayden Wandler stopped 34 of 43 shots in goal.

Marcus Klarich (1+6) and Joel McCormick (3+3) led the Lakers in the loss.

Malawsky also had a hat trick against New Westminster, while Luke Pisani (1+1) and Vanichuk had the other goals.

Wandler stopped 40 of 51 shots with Deklan Morrison making four saves on five shots in just over eight minutes of relief. Lukas Nielsen led the Salmonbellies with five goals while Ryan Downie stopped 29 of 34 shots as New Westminster badly out shot 91原创 56-34.

91原创鈥檚 record sits at 4-9-1 as they face an uphill battle in earning a BC Junior A Lacrosse League playoff berth.

91原创 sits five points back with just seven games remaining, as well as two other teams ahead of them also chasing that fourth and final playoff spot.

Nanaimo (7-6) currently holds the last spot and that is the Thunder鈥檚 next opponent as they travel to Vancouver Island to face the Timbermen today (Saturday, June 17) at 3:30 p.m.

TIER 1 THUNDER DEFEAT BURNABY 14-5

91原创 Thunder鈥檚 playoff hopes remain alive.

The Thunder delivered a solid 60-minute effort to defeat the Burnaby Lakers 14-5 on Tuesday night at 91原创 Events Centre in BC Junior Tier 1 Lacrosse League action.

The victory allows 91原创 (4-10, 8 points) to leapfrog the Lakers (3-11-1, 7 points) for the eighth and final post-season berth. 91原创 has four games remaining in the regular season while Burnaby plays three more times.

Burnaby opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, but the Thunder responded with Noah Buchan forcing a turnover on the 91原创 side of the floor, before streaking down to the other end and scoring a diving, individual goal to tie the score just 11 seconds later.

The goal sparked the Thunder who dominated the rest of the period and led 4-1 after one period. And 91原创 鈥 which has been plagued by poor second periods on multiple occasions this season 鈥 did not let up, outscoring the Lakers 7-2 in the middle frame. The final period featured five goals, but three came from 91原创 as they won all three periods.

For much of the season, the coaching staff has been stressing the need for the team to string together three solid periods and on Tuesday, they finally came through in what was their largest margin of victory on the season, said head coach Darren Buchan.

鈥淓veryone did their job today. For a young group, they need to learn how to do that. And I think that is what is going to make them better as we keep moving forward,鈥 Buchan predicted.

鈥淚t is a confidence boost. It puts us in a playoff spot, it gives us a couple of opportunities to keep fighting. And they are looking for a reason to fight because we have so many injuries,鈥 the coach said, referencing the fact they have had seven season-ending injuries.

Another factor in the victory was having both sides of the offence working as Vaughn Pinchin (3+3) and Jake Newby (3+1) both had hat tricks. Joseph Killcommons added a pair, while Buchan, Brock Lamotte (1+1), Logan Kierstead, Mac Timms (1+2), Connor Welsch (1+2), and Talon Schroeder (1+1) had a goal apiece.

The offensive outburst marked the second time in the past three games 91原创 has scored in double digits and they are now 2-1 in that span.

鈥淚t has been either our right-side is going or its our left-side, this time we had both and our defence played great, and our goalie (Todd Hensrud) only let in five goals on 39 shots,鈥 Buchan said.

Anthony Vargas led the Lakers with three goals.

91原创 did not have much time to rest up. They were right back in action on Wednesday, June 14) with a visit to Coquitlam to face the Adanacs (12-1). Stay tuned for results.
