“Superfan” Nav Bhatia brought his energy and enthusiasm for the game of basketball to a three-day youth camp at 91ԭ Events Centre running from July 4 to July 6.

For 100 kids ranging in age from eight to 14 every day, the Fantasy Basketball Camp was an opportunity to feel like they had been drafted into the WNBA or NBA, with each getting their own locker, jersey and ball, and skills tips from certified trainers.

For Bhatia, who began organizing training camps in Ontario a year ago, it was his first time holding them in tB.C., spending three days at the LEC and two days in Victoria.

Bhatia, a successful businessman who has attended every Toronto Raptors home game since 1995 (expect for the period during the pandemic when the team relocated to Florida), founded and currently runs the non-profit , which in addition to organizing the camps has raised funds to build girls’ washrooms at more than 20 schools in northern India.

It’s stated goal: unite people of all ages and backgrounds through the game of basketball so they don’t have to face the discrimination Bhatia faced over the years as a visible minority.

Sport can bring all ethic groups together, he believes.

“We are all the same. The beauty of this country, the strength of this country is we are all the same.”

The sport has also given a lot back: what fan can say they were the grand marshal of their team’s championship parade? Or have been inducted into the Hall of Fame?

“These are all blessings,” Bhatia said.

“This is my way of giving back to Canada.”

“This country has given me everything that I own.”

After the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Championship during the 2018–2019 season, Bhatia became the first ever fan to receive an official NBA Championship ring.

All campers get to try it on, about 30,000 kids so far.

“This gives them the pride and the confidence that if Superfan can do it, they can do it,” he said.

“I am blessed. I came to this country with nothing,” Bhatia said.

“This country gave me everything and today we are here because of that. God has been very kind to me.”
